The 500 Club was delighted to welcome members and guests to this morning’s Meet the Shadow Minister Breakfast featuring Hon Tjorn Sibma MLC, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council and Shadow Minister for Finance, Training and Workforce Development, Major Infrastructure and Veterans.
The breakfast provided another excellent example of what makes The 500 Club unique creating an environment where business leaders can engage directly with policymakers, share their experiences from the front line, and have open and meaningful discussions about the issues affecting Western Australian businesses and communities.
The conversation covered a broad range of topics, with attendees openly sharing their perspectives and personal experiences. A key theme throughout the morning was the rising cost of doing business, with many businesses discussing the increasing financial pressures they face and the impact this is having on growth, investment and confidence.
There was also significant discussion around the future of education, skills development, and workforce training. Members highlighted the importance of creating stronger pathways through the education system, ensuring young people are equipped with practical skills, and better aligning training opportunities with the needs of industry. Personal experiences were shared regarding current skills shortages and the challenges businesses encounter when attracting and retaining a capable workforce.
Workplace health and safety was another important topic, particularly the increasing focus on psychosocial hazards and the practical implications of evolving HSE policies.
The morning concluded with a thoughtful conversation about the role families, schools and businesses all play in supporting young people and ensuring future generations are equipped with the skills, resilience and opportunities they need to succeed.
