Meet Senator Dean Smith
Senator Dean Smith has represented Western Australia as a Liberal Senator since May 2012, following a casual Senate vacancy created by the passing of Liberal Senator Judith Adams.
Under the leadership of Angus Taylor, Senator Smith has been appointed to the Coalition’s Economic Policy Team as Shadow Assistant Minister to the Shadow Treasurer and Shadow Assistant Minister for the Cost of Living. He previously served on the Coalition’s Economic Team as Shadow Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury from June 2022 to May 2025.
Senator Smith has also held significant parliamentary responsibilities, including serving as Chief Government Whip in the Senate, a position to which he was elected by his Liberal Senate colleagues in January 2019.
His current Parliamentary Committee responsibilities include:
- Deputy Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade
- Deputy Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on the Implementation of the National Redress Scheme
- Chair of the Senate Scrutiny of Bills Committee
In 2018, Senator Smith was awarded the McKinnon Prize in Political Leadership by a panel of eminent Australians including John Howard and Julia Gillard.
Prior to entering the Senate, Dean worked as a Policy Advisor to both Western Australian Premier Richard Court and Prime Minister John Howard, before holding senior executive roles with Insurance Australia Group and SingTel Optus.
With limited places available, this is an opportunity not to be missed for business owners, professionals and those wanting to stay connected with the issues shaping Western Australia and Australia’s future.
